Reading can fall into two catagories. Those works that "have" to be read, and those works that we "get" to read! Of course our normal preference is into the latter catagory only branching into the former when we are required.

I wish to present to you a work that is in the "get to" catagory but I would highly recommend everyone putting it into the "have to" segment. Not only is it a book that is inspiring but it also is a joy to read.

The book is titled, "A Good And Faithful Servant". It is the biogrophy of Dr. John Whitcomb, professor, teacher, author. He was the co-author of the ground breaking work called, "The Genesis Flood"

This work goes through Dr. Whitcomb's early years, his growth, struggles, time of war, teaching, loss, and victories. In all points, it points to the leading, guiding, and power of God who guides each and every single one of us.

It is not a short book. At almost 550 pages, it is fairly hefty. However, it is written in such a way that it really is that "page turner" of a book that we love to read.

I have almost nothing but positive to say about it. There is one point that I would disagree with the author (who happens to be Dr. Whitcomb's own son). There is a section that shares where Dr. Whitcomb's change from one denomination to the Fellowship of Grace Brethren (now called Charis Fellowship).

As a former member of the Church of the Brethren, and now a member of the Covenant Brethren Church, there is a mis-understanding of the history of the Brethren by the author. The author makes a few remarks about the history and beginning of the Brethren that comes from the rebranding done in the 1920's.

To understand this, a work that can be read is Carl Bowman's work, "Brethren Society" and more specifically the chapter that deals with the re-writing of history (the true name of the chapter escapes me at the moment).  The issue is that this rebranding was to change how the Brethren were viewed and, as the comment stated off of Good Reads by Denise Kettering who said, "With a focus on the transition of the Dunkers from a predominantly closed group to a group that attempted to appear more like other Protestants,.

My own warning and opinion on this is important. I am not a huge fan of Carl Bowman's work. His biases are clearly seen in his writing and as a historian, this should not be. To get a better understanding of the Brethren from a true Historical perspective, I would encourage reading Donald Durnbaugh's work "Fruit of the Vine". He is a true Historian. Please know, the price  varies where you may look. It is not cheap, but it is well worth getting.

But regarding the book, "A Good and Faithful Servant", this little disagreement does not negatively affect my opinion of the work. It is a good book and I would highly encourage everyone to get a copy of this work. It is encouraging to see how God can raise up those who are going to do His will and by doing so, see God's truth cause dynamic changes throughout the world!
