When we talk about devotionals, and we start to look at which one to read, we will quickly be inundated by thousands. Print, online, snail mail, email, mobile, desktop, each one coming regularly. There are some really good ones. There are some that leave a lot to be desired. But out of many, few rise to the level of classic. Out of those few, a very precious handful rise to the level of powerful. From there, only one or two come to the level of epic.
This devotional by Oswald Chambers, is that one. From the time of Oswald's death in 1917, his lectures were compiled by his wife and in 1927 it was published in Britian. In the 1930's they were published here in the U.S. This classical work had millions engaged with the way Oswald wrote and presented truths from the Scripture. and time rolled on. Then, in From that moment to 1992, the work stayed the same. In 1992, a bookstore owner, James Reimann, felt called to update this powerful work and the updated version was born.
It is this version that I have and have read several times and the quality and depth is always amazing to read. A life, cut short in 1917, that continues to change lives and hearts long after the author's passing is absolutely amazing and a testiment to the blessing and grace of our Lord Jesus.
Now, in 2023, there is a newer modern update into even more modern language. I have personally read the classic, and the updated version. I have not read this newer modern version and therefore cannot recommend it. However, I personally can and will recommend both the older versions.

As for me, The 1992 version strikes that balance of modernicity, yet faithfulness to the original. Either way, the classic, or the older remake can and will engage with you as it has millions of others. I pray you may also find yourself engaged with this writing and be brought into a deeper relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
