October 31st, 1517, Martin Luther posted his Ninety Five Thesis on the door of his church in Germany. What resulted was an absolute gutting of many of the core teachings of the Catholic church in the hearts and minds of many. There was a renewed fervor for the Word of God and it burst forth from each home and village across the country and soon Europe. On this day, many in the Calvinistic (think Presbyterian), Lutheran, and other reformed churches hold to this day as a great thing.
I am not going to throw the baby out with the bath water here, and I do believe there was a good thing that was done. But to think that only the confessional or reformed churches can hold and celebrate the Reformation is missing a darker side of History of both Calvinists and Lutherans.
A further question should be asked, what about Brethren? Brethren? Yes, Brethren. I will not go through the History. What I will do is post a video from Dr. Leighton Flowers. He was a Calvinist who has since came out of that and is now teaching the full Gospel that all are free to come to Jesus.
He posted this a while ago and the video is well worth the watch. From the History he presents, Reformation Day is for all who claim the name of Christ but more shockingly even from the very quiet, and unassuming section of Christendom, who find their roots in the Anabaptist and Pietist traditions, namely: The Baptist and Brethren!
Enjoy and Happy Belated Reformation Day!
